Approaching midsummer, we are in the lunar month symbolized by the Oak Tree. Note the synchronism… for the Oak reaches the height of its flowering, at the same time the calendar reaches its highest point with the Solstice later in June. There is a continuity here which has carried on across centuries of time and generations.
An ancient Celtic Liturgy, or invocation, known as the ‘Song of Amergin’, describes the current season as follows, “I am a God who sets the head afire with smoke…”. This line describes the present time of year as being one which encourages inspiration. And the Oak Tree, as understood by the Ancient Ones, was believed to have the properties which best symbolized this truth. For its roots sink as deep into the ground, as its accompanying branches reach high into the sky. As such, the Oak has come to represent strength and courage… endurance and triumph. Qualities which are integral to our own lives as well.
We experience a lift to both heart and spirit, as the days reveal themselves into June, and on through the summer months which follow. The rains of April nurtured and called forth the flowers of May. These in their turn, have now burst into a vibrancy of life, as manifested by the vivid hues of green which are the hallmark of the present season. No wonder the Ancients considered it a time of inspiration! For who couldn’t help but be touched by the miracle of growth, so evident in the natural world?! In Nature, as in our personal lives, endurance honed through the cold, bleak days of winter, has now triumphed into the promise of abundance and good things to come. This observation from the natural world helps us draw strength and courage, when such assurance is needed, to walk the paths through the varying seasons of our own life. The flowering Oak, its boughs heavy with green, evinces a hope and grace which enhances and enlightens our way as we step into the season of summer.
Surely, there is a Higher Power whose hand is upon us; leading, guiding and nurturing all… inspiration indeed! May summer fill your thoughts with unbounded joy, and encourage you to new heights of creativity; the better to refresh and renew your spirit.
