The Museful Mind

Contrary Winds

Looking up at the green leafy branches of a large oak tree

To describe the present time as ‘difficult’ is a massive understatement.  What we have seen, experienced, and had to cope with, has been beyond anything anyone of us could imagine.  From pandemic to politics, uncontrolled violence, mass shootings, extremities of weather… the list continues on, ad infinitum.  It’s like watching a disaster movie; and social media assures we feel the pain and confusion.  To our dismay, not only do we have a front-row seat – we’re living it in real-time.  Every generation has had its challenges, and this is what will define ours when history looks back… when we look back, some years from now.

Former US Senate Chaplain, Peter Marshall once prayed, “When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds, and diamonds are made under pressure”.  This quote comes to mind a lot lately.  When the days are too long, the burdens seem heavy… and the future more like a threat than a promise. Full as it is, with questions and uncertainty.

None of us is quite the same person pre-pandemic.  We have changed in ways not yet fully understood, and only time will reveal how.  The challenges have been many, and of necessity made us stronger, more resilient.  We’ve learned to think outside the box; become creative when life throws that unexpected curve ball or two (or more) our way.  Taking the unexpected in our stride now, where once we would have faltered.  Today, we simply find a way around the obstacle… and move on.  It’s hit home, that this is the way life is.  A dynamic force, and none of us can afford to remain static.  Looking back is a luxury sometimes, and can trip us up if studied for too long.

Contrary winds have been blowing a gale force lately.  We’ve had to scramble for firmer ground.  Steering our lives amidst the waves of turmoil so as not to capsize, or founder upon the rock of circumstance.  Under pressure we have grown, learning some tough lessons of life… and loss.  Gaining a deeper knowledge of ourselves, of our strengths; many of which we were previously unaware.  And that is a good thing.  We’re not out of the woods yet when it comes to difficulties or trials, but this can be said for life in general – even pre-pandemic.  The virus has only brought this truth home in a clearer way.  However, one thing we do know and can be assured of, the pressure it engenders within, has made us stronger.  More sure and confident of fielding those curve balls.

Peter Marshall goes on to say, “God will not permit any troubles to come upon us, unless He has a specific plan by which great blessings can come out of the difficulty”.  There is a rhyme and reason to what we’ve had to face and experience.  We can’t as yet see the bigger picture, or fully comprehend the whys and wherefores.  Our lives are still a work in progress.  The pain has been deep and the losses great.  For many, the price paid far too much.  However, one day… someday… the lessons so hard-earned will reveal themselves.  And maybe, good will have come out of the heretofore unseen… just over the horizon… or around the corner we turn.  An insight, or enlightening moment will dawn, and we will better comprehend the meaning of these days.

God does not leave us comfortless, this He promises.  Amidst the contrary winds, and the pressure which feels too heavy on occasion… He is there.  Guiding us in ways not yet fathomable or understood.  Such guidance in itself, reveals His Presence however, walking the day with us… by our side.

The winds will eventually subside given time and patience– they always do.  The pressure will ease, and a relief set in.  For that too, is the way of life.  Troubles do not last forever… or even viruses for that matter.  It only seems this way… as an illusion.

Remember, ‘great blessings can come out of difficulties.’   You do not hurt or suffer in vain.  There is a good out there which will, in time, reveal itself.
Like the Oak, bending with the winds of circumstance so as not to break; building resilience and fortitude.  Like the diamond, seemingly strong and hard; gleaming amidst the darkness.
We – are the hope and strength we seek.  Resilient like the Oak, reflecting light as a diamond.  A blessing come from within ourselves in a difficult time.  Stand tall… and shine
