“The essence of optimism is not its view of the present,
but the fact that it is the inspiration of life and hope when others give in…”
These words were written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer from his cell in Tegal Prison, where he was to remain for almost two years. This was how he survived throughout that time. The long, lonely days of isolation, the deprivations… the interrogations and nightly air raids. Within that prison cell, his spirit had the capacity to rise above those terrible circumstances, and see beyond to a better, more peaceful life ahead.
And that is our task today.
So, we begin this New Year 2026 with a determination to cultivate a more optimistic attitude. In the hope that doing so, will allow our spirits to rise above the strife, violence, and chaos so prevalent in the world around us. We cannot let it bleed our hearts of the hope for better days to come. That would be giving in, letting the forces of cruelty and madness run wild. And this simply cannot be granted the license to happen.
Optimism is not to be scoffed at. It is neither weak nor silly. For there is a strength and power inherent within this frame of mind which infuses one with determination. The determination to stand up. To speak up for all that is good and right… and true. In thus doing, we begin that process of bringing about a change of direction; away from the dark of today, towards the light which tomorrow can – and does – hold.
The anxieties and worries of this world cannot be allowed to defeat us, to rob us of what joy there is in the present. Given time, the storm of destruction currently raging will pass. Those responsible will find there is a price to pay for ignoring the common decencies of life, the inhumanity of what they are attempting to bring about. They will fall in accordance to their actions. But we will move on; building a better, and more sustainable society.
Nature abhors a vacuum. Take things too far and it will collapse under its own weight; falling into nothing but dust and ashes. It is out of this, that the seeds of hope will sprout; offering a brighter, kinder, and more charitable way of life. One in acknowledgment of, and in keeping with, the basic laws of nature and humanity. A life built on growth will sustain itself far better than one built on nothing but destruction.
Bonhoeffer’s words on optimism continue:
“…it enables people to hold their heads high when everything seems to be going wrong:
it gives them strength to sustain the reverses,
and yet to claim the future for themselves
instead of abandoning it to their opponents.”
How very true these words are. We need to hold them close to our heart, take heed – and continue on. Living one day at a time until the light, yet again, overcomes the darkness. It always does, you know. For light is indeed the stronger force, and will ultimately prevail.
Bonhoeffer’s words are meant to infuse us with hope. For hope which is conveyed by optimism is not easily extinguished. He exhorts us to hold our heads high throughout the challenges we face. That we might find within, the strength to carry on… despite the turbulent, disturbing events swirling without and around us.
And so, we strive to make the year 2026 one of hope-filled optimism. Through the coming months, may the power contained therein help carry us above whatever storms life may have in store. Secure in the knowledge that a calmer, kinder and more peace-filled time will ultimately be ours.
May you be blessed with “the inspiration of hope and life” this New Year – 2026.
