The Museful Mind

Read the Signs…

These are confusing and difficult times.  It feels as though life has changed overnight, and not necessarily for the better.  The truths and tenets we have always been taught and believe in, have suddenly been tossed out the window.  They no longer seem to apply anymore.

Like Alice, we have fallen down the rabbit hole, and struggle to make some sense of it all.  Except this is not a Wonderland, but rather a troubled land.  And we must adjust both compass and outlook, in order to navigate what the days ahead will bring.  For some, it is a welcome change; a cause for joy.  For the rest of us, a challenge in response to what we perceive as a threat… not only to our lives, but society itself – the very fabric of our being.

So, where do we go from here?  That is the hard question to ask.  And while there are many possible answers, they are not for the most part good or viable.  Walking our own path, discovering the best way forward, has now become more difficult.

For ourselves, as individuals, there is no wrong way.  However, the current climate in society will undoubtedly take issue with this.  And therein lies the problem – and the dilemma.

Unsure, when what was bright turns dark
And life, it seems, has lost its way,
we question what we once believed
and fear that doubt has come to stay…”

The paths we walk have always been full of twists and turns.  No one ever said it would be a smooth or easy journey.  For most of us there are a few hurdles and stumbles along the way.  Then there are those for whom life is a cakewalk, so to speak.  But that is only a small minority, and in truth, they are the ones missing out.  Since it is the struggle, the things we have to fight for which gives life meaning.  This is what makes us strong, lifts us up; filling our lives with purpose.  As such, there is a deeper sense of appreciation, which in turn enhances life.  For gratitude imbues our days with significance.

There are any number of  ‘sayings’ regarding those hurdles which get in our way.  Pointing out that stumbling blocks are just stepping stones in disguise.  One popular adage insists that if you lift your foot high enough, then that block will become a mere stone, easily stepped over, as you continue on the way.  Of course the effort thus required, puts it back on us.  And perhaps rightly so, for attitude can be everything sometimes.

But… what if that so-called stumbling block is not a potential stepping stone?  And is instead a way-marker pointing towards a different path?  Indicative of the need to change direction.  The road doesn’t always move ahead.  Sometimes it leads sideways.  And that’s okay.  This is perhaps more productive than beating one’s head against the proverbial wall.  Or alternately, stepping so high as to fall.

A stumbling block can sometimes be a way-marker, guiding our steps along a different, more beneficial path.  Possibly showing the way we are truly meant to go.

Reading these signs in life is not an easy task.  Doing so requires work, and a certain amount of introspection which some may find uncomfortable or disturbing.

It also takes time to differentiate between a block in the road, and whether it be a stepping stone, or a way-marker pointing direction.  Some would say this is well worth the effort; distinguishing their subtle variations.

Discovering what we feel to be the right path, the better to be true to ourselves as individuals, is to live at peace personally… and with the world at large, regardless.  For this is a gift which cannot be taken away.  It is acknowledging that God made us each unique, and no one has the right to force us to be other than who and what we are.

Stack of pebbles with heart shaped pebble and spiral sand waves

Where minds and bodies reel with pain
which nervous smiles can never mask,
and hope is forced to face despair
and all the things it dared not ask…”

In the face of today’s headwinds, being our true selves will be a struggle at times.  And looking around the world-at-large only further confuses the issue.  For there is such a plethora of misinformation vs. disinformation, it can be hard to distinguish actual fact.

To seek out truth and reality from whatever prevailing trend is making the rounds, not only requires a well-honed sense of discernment, but also a strong sense of self.

The chaos and confusion prevailing, makes it harder to differentiate a stumbling block from a stepping stone… or a possible way-marker instead.  And only you can tell which is what, for the true answer lies within.

Ah, God, You with the Maker’s eye,
can tell if all that’s feared is real,
And see if life is more than what
we suffer, dread, despise and feel.”

The heart knows what it knows… listen to it.  For therein will be found the answers to the true path you were meant to walk.  Reading the signs; be they stumbling blocks, stepping stones, or way-markers informing your step, will provide the guidance and direction you need or seek.

For the Lord longs to be gracious to you:
He rises to show you compassion.
For the Lord is a God of justice.
Blessed are all those who wait for Him…
Whether you turn to the right or to the left,
your ears will hear a voice behind (inside) you,
saying, ‘This is the way…’ “
(Isa. 30; 18, 21)

Hear Him, and be at peace within yourself.
Amen.

  1. Wow. A lot of food for thought here, Bev. Beautifully composed, as usual. Lots of take-aways here. Thanks so much for sharing.
    Love,
    Michelle

  2. Dear Bev, as I listen to the news lately, I feel it is to believe or not to believe that is the question. Not like it was when I was young many years ago. Love you, Jim

  3. A beautiful, timely post, my dear friend! You speak with wisdom & in a graciously measured way when so many are reacting out of fear, insecurity, & anger. I got up, a few days ago, looked out the window, & noticed that the sun was rising as it does each day! It reminded me that, despite the current unrest in our country, life goes on. I do believe that God is in control & that we are safe, resting in His arms!

    1. Your own words are very wise Barb. The sun rises and sets each day – God is indeed in control and looking out for us. We can rest secure in His arms… and feel safe! Thank you for this reminder. Something we all need!
