“Communal life is the roses and lilies of Christian life.”
D. Bonhoeffer
Hidden deep within the folds of a cold mid-winter day…
When the sky is blank – forbidding, and the landscape bare and grey.
With wind gusts iced and chilling, stabbing fingers at the heart.
As snow drifts down in blankets, thick and heavy… still and stark.
The clouds are full and dreary,
Overcast, and hanging low.
Nature, lost and vacant,
As the frigid air doth blow.
The weariness of winter,
creeps into our very core.
Where it numbs the heart and spirit,
Faint upon its barren shore.
A voice calls out to cease! Til the sound breaks in the air.
But the cold is unforgiving, for it shows no mercy there
And our thoughts echo the silence, of a deep, unspoken fear,
That the ever -present bleakness will remain forever near.
Overshadowing our days as we walk on through the year,
Extinguishing compassion, freezing still the human tear.
Yet never quite forgotten,
Midst the swirl of clouds above.
Is that Winter’s ice eternal
cannot freeze God’s Heavenly Love.
For the soul lies soft and hidden,
Safely sheltered from the storm.
Waiting patiently til bidden…
Home to where it’s safe and warm.
Among the fellowship of laughter, falling sweet upon the ear,
The soul comes swiftly winging, to the call of Friendship dear.
Wrapped snug and close in arms of love, that reach out through the dark.
The soul blooms in the nature of a kind and caring heart.
Just like any tender flower, it responds to warmth and light.
Bestowing cheer and comfort, within the cold of winter’s night.
Planted sure and strong in faith, where it thrives on hope and love.
And lives amid the storms of life… a gift from God above.
So do not fear the winter of a dark and dreary day.
Since it cannot chill the landscape which grows beyond the grey,
Where the seeds of love and caring, are planted in His Light.
And so… we reap the flowers,
Roses-red and Lilies-white.
For Friendships are the blossoms
In the garden of our life.
Happy Valentine Day!

Thank you Michelle! It was a joy to write. And I like the tie-in to Bonhoeffer’s beautiful words and observation. He does this so well.
